Our single origin Burundi decaf!Ā

Ā

The single origin Burundi Decaf is a specialty addition to our Swiss Water Decaf lineup.Ā  Crafted by the coffee roaster for a single decaf coffee that is rich with caramel and chocolate notes.Ā  A good option for espresso or filter with those that buy coffee online and in our retail store.Ā

This coffee is from a collaboration between a group of farmers known as the Kalico and some importers.Ā  This collaboration gave rise to the Rotheca Project.Ā  It aims to allevaite poverty and promotes women in the coffee industry.Ā  The project is heavily community driven with strong initiatives to improve the quality of life for the locals through education, training, environmental protection, social infrastructure and a scholarship program for young girls.

If you consume coffee for pure pleasure rather than merely the caffeine fix we want to put something mind blowing in your mug!Ā  We pride ourselves on valuing the sensory experience of coffee over its pharmaceutical/caffeinated effects.

Swiss Water Decaf

All our decaf is Swiss Water Processed meaning that the caffeine is removed without the use of chemicals.Ā  The innovative process gently removes the caffeine with the use of pure water.Ā  It does this by immersing caffeinated green (raw) coffee in a solution of previously decaffeinated green coffee water, osmosis fairly selectively removes the caffeine.Ā  This gives us the end result of a decaffeinated coffee that tastes just as delicious as its caffeinated counterpart.
More information about the process can be found here: https://www.swisswater.com/our-process/

šŸ˜‹Ā Flavour Notes:

A rich coffee with chocolate and caramel notes with flavours of spiced apple crumble and a long chocolate honey cake aftertaste.Ā  Red apple skin acidity with a medium to full body.

āœļøĀ Recipe:

Filter Brew Ratio: 1:15
Brew Time:Ā Less than 2-minutes (depending on brew method).
This means that for every gram of ground coffee added into the filter there is 18 grams of hot water.Ā  If using a plunger/French press you can add two tablespoonā€™s of ground coffee (approximately 14-grams), mixed with 250ml of hot water.Ā  Still stuck?Ā  Check out this link to learn more about brew ratios clickĀ here.

Our recipes are designed as templates for starting points and do vary depending on many other variables including personal preferences in particular.

A quality specialty decaf

Most decaf available in NZ is rubbish. Even the single origin decafs from some notable roasters are pretty poor quality and roasted quite dark. Iā€™m not someone that needs to drink decaf but when something is available that looks like itā€™s worth trying I like to grab it as it gives me the option to have a coffee later in the day or just drink more coffee over a day. Iā€™ve only had 2 decafs roasted in NZ in the past that were any good for soft brew or a light espresso, this one makes 3. Itā€™s sold as a filter roast but I think it will work just as well as espresso so I might try it at some stage. So far Iā€™ve only had filter brews and itā€™s really quite nice. Follow the recommended brew recipe if you can and use cooler water thatā€™s about 80-85deg and you should get a nice coffee that is sweet and balanced with a smooth, almost buttery mouthfeel. Iā€™m glad I grabbed a bag of this to try as itā€™s really good.
